Born to pious parents, young Teresa was distraught when her mother died at a young age. This led her to turn to the Virgin Mary for comfort. She became interested in earthly matters and her natural charm made it easy for her to make friends. Despite this, she was not at peace and decided to join the Carmelite Order, which was very lax at the time.

Shortly after joining the order, Teresa suffered from a severe illness. Through her sufferings, she began to experience divine visions and had a deep inner peace. Later in her life she founded a reformed convent of Saint John of Avila and started new houses throughout Spain despite harsh criticism. Known today as a great mystic and a Doctor of the Church, Saint Teresa of Avila is a great example in love for God, reverent payer, suffering with joy, and brave resilience.
