Thinking Like a Saint: Discernment of Spirits | Ignatius Press

Rooted in the rich soil of the Catholic spiritual tradition, Thinking Like a Saint brings Saint Ignatius of Loyola's fourteen Rules for the Discernment of Spirits to life for every modern disciple. Author Fr. Timothy Gallagher illuminates each rule with the parallel wisdom of the Church's greatest spiritual masters, showing that Ignatius did not invent a new spirituality, but gave precise, practical language to the universal experience of every soul seeking God. Whether you are new to Ignatian spirituality or a seasoned practitioner, this book opens a doorway into deeper self-knowledge, clearer prayer, and more confident discernment of God's voice in daily life.

Why You'll Love It

• Bridges St. Ignatius' compact rules with the broader voices of the saints — Augustine, Teresa of Ávila, John of the Cross, Thérèse of Lisieux, Francis de Sales, and more
• Each chapter is concise and accessible, making deep spiritual theology approachable for everyday readers
• Reveals that discernment of spirits is not an elite practice but a universal experience of every follower of Christ
• Written in a reverent, pastoral tone that invites reflection and personal application
• An ideal companion for spiritual direction, retreats, or personal lectio divina
